The jackfruit industry in India is about to become very popular. According to The Times of India, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma released a draft policy to generate employment opportunities for more than 80,000 farmers, utilising the 1 million jackfruit trees in the state. Each tree can generate an average income of Rs 5000, with about 200 fruits per tree.
So while this will boost India’s economy, it will also provide a valuable alternative to meat in classic Indian dishes. But what exactly is jackfruit?
Well, it’s the largest tree-borne fruit on the planet, each one weighing up to 80 pounds! Used in Indian cuisine for ages, it can be both a side vegetable and a meat substitute. Not only is jackfruit delicious; it’s a great source of potassium, calcium, and iron. Called the “miracle crop,” the fruit has drought-resistant properties and could potentially replace staple crops threatened by climate change.
