No Slaughterhouses Allowed in Uttarakhand
After banning angling in the state’s waterways, Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to issue a complete ban on slaughterhouses. Famous for its natural resources and pilgrimage sites, the Himalayan state is consciously taking steps to protect animals and all forms of life.

As reported in The Indian Express, Sri Trivendra Singh Rawat, chief minister of the state, said that no further licences would be issued to slaughterhouses and that those issued in the past would be revoked. Reiterating the state’s commitment to protecting animals, the chief minister said that special squads would be formed in Haridwar, Dehradun, and other major cities to stop the killing of animals and that the state would build cow shelters for stray cows. The Uttarakhand government has taken the right decision at the right time. After all, no animal wants to die to become someone’s food. Driven by ethical values, this decision will certainly have a far-reaching impact on farmed animals, people’s health, and our environment.

Climate change is a serious issue and more and more we are seeing the consequences of the damage we have done to the environment. In recent years, Uttarakhand too has seen some fierce natural disasters, including floods that devastated parts of the state, from the peaks of Kedarnath to the plains of Haridwar.

Now the truth is out in the open that raising animals for food causes serious harm to our environment and is the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions. Astonishingly, factory farms produce more greenhouse gas than all cars, planes, and other means of transportation combined. And fresh water, already a scarce resource, is being grossly wasted by the meat, dairy, and egg industries. In fact, animal agriculture is responsible for half of all water use in the U.S. It is also the main cause of Amazon deforestation; every six seconds, an acre of rainforest is cut down for grazing and growing feed crops for cattle.

Factory farming is both killing the environment and threatening our planet’s biodiversity. Not only are tens of billions of animals killed for food around the world; the meat and dairy industries kill millions of wild animals who are viewed as a potential threat to livestock.

We deserve to know where our food comes from, and there is no doubt that all animal products come from hell. Cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, and other animals raised for food face diabolical abuse at factory farms. Crammed into tiny, filthy cages, many of these animals can hardly move. They are beaten with metal rods, mutilated without painkillers, and ultimately subjected to violent slaughter.

Animal products are also bad for human health. Consumption of dairy, eggs, and meat is linked to serious health problems, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, cancer, and hormonal disorders. Animal products are simply no good for anyone.

But times are changing, and the rapid rise of veganism is a sign of a more responsible and kinder future. People from around the globe are embracing plant-based eating habits for their own health, to combat adverse environmental conditions, and to spare animals from lifelong suffering at factory farms.
